Several Basic Elements for Alpaca Farming Posted: 21 Jul 2011 12:15 PM PDT This article is for people who will be starting out with Alpaca Farming soon. However, this is not a 101 article and assumes the readers have done some basic research already. You will find some very valuable, detailed information here. We are going to cover three elements of alpaca care in this article: finding a vet, how and why to use a chute and toenail care. Alpacas are hearty animals, rarely needing emergency vet care. You will use a vet for routine care probably once a year, for yearly vaccines and exams, then depending on the size and behavior of your herd, you may use a vet to administer worming medicine. Don't wait for your first yearly vet visit to establish a relationship with your vet, because.... |
The Best Equipment for Alpaca Farming Posted: 21 Jul 2011 12:14 PM PDT Alpaca Farming, like all other small farms, will require some sweat equity and heavy moving. Start with knowing your land and your seasons. Dry and hot climates will require more shade and water work, while rainy and snowy climates will have more concern for mud control clear lanes of travel. Here are some machines and tools which you can't do without, and some that you may function without, but could save you hours each week if you had them. The list is long and some of them are expensive. To buy all of these tools at once may bankrupt you, do not hesitate to look into a good used machine, and many hardware and farm stores will have equipment you can rent. Although you never want to wear your neighbors out, if you live in a rural area, your neighbors may have equipment you can use. Make sure you always offer something to them and return what you borrowed well-cleaned and as quickly as you can. You will find it to your own benefit to return anything cleaner than when you borrowed it. This will be like putting money in a bank. |
Avoid Common Pitfalls in Alpaca Farming Posted: 21 Jul 2011 12:12 PM PDT Your time Alpaca Farming will be both fun and uncomplicated for almost every second you spend on your farm. However, being aware of the most common hazards you may encounter as you farm and work with these animals, will make any challenges you may run into much easier to handle. Let's start with the actual Alpaca animal. Alpacas are very healthy animals for the most part, so you should only have to look for a few signs to indicate an unhealthy animal. The best time to check for body conformation is within a few month of their being sheared. If an alpaca has a problem in any of the below areas, you may be spending extra time and money to keep them, and you may not be able to resell the animal. If you are just starting out, I would highly suggest you reject any animals that fall into these categories. If you have a few years of experience, you may be able to better evaluate and take a risk on a borderline purchase. |
Posted: 21 Jul 2011 11:47 AM PDT Alpaca Breeding has a most gratifying aspect - the most precious and rewarding part of your work that makes all the effort worth it: Birth Day! Whether you bred your female or you purchased one already bred; you should have generally calculated when your dam will give birth. The gestation period for alpacas is 11.5 months, with birth coming within 2 weeks on either side of this date. |
What To Expect When Breeding Alpacas Posted: 21 Jul 2011 11:43 AM PDT Breeding Alpacas can be a great addition to keeping them as pets or using them as fiber animals. In comparison with many other animals, breeding alpacas is easy, rewarding and you see your results quickly. To ensure that it stays easy, you will have to put in just a little research and planning to establish the animals you will consider as your breeders. Your first decision to make is what you want to achieve - what you want from the crias (babies). If you just produce crias with no thought or plan, you will find that you have no buyers for them, or they sell for far below what it cost to produce them. So you must decide if you want to produce alpacas with excellent quality fiber, or with great confirmation (show animals), or that produce a certain coloring. There is no wrong answer here, but you need to have a long-term goal in order to make good pairings which will produce crias that will be profitable. |
