The four-year wait is nearly over as the Rugby World Cup kicks off in early September, but fans planning to drive to the matches should check their car cover first, it has been suggested.
Taking a car abroad should not be a problem for drivers - around one in seven UK motorists does it each year - but even some comprehensive insurance policies do not provide full overseas cover unless the trip is very short or an additional fee is paid.
Without coughing up the cash, drivers will be left with just enough insurance to make it legal to drive the car in the foreign country, but would be liable for any bill for damages or theft.
And with thousands of Brits set to descend on France for the showpiece rugby competition, NFU Mutual suggested they should check their cover well in advance.
Company representative Laura Wood says: "As travel plans are finalised and the excitement builds for fans of all of the home nations, insurance can be the last thing on your mind.
"However, driving on unfamiliar foreign roads can be a tricky business. It is important that you check whether you are covered in the event of an accident or theft."
It is also advisable for those travelling abroad to ensure their car is in good condition before making their trip as breaking down abroad, even if the driver''s insurance is valid, can be a nightmare to deal with, especially if there is a language barrier to overcome.
